3000 kVA Pad-Mount Transformers For Sale
3000 kVA pad-mount units are used on large industrial and manufacturing services, data center power blocks, large campus buildings, and utility-scale EV charging and fleet electrification projects.
New three-phase pad-mount units are commonly quoted at roughly 34–65 weeks from major manufacturers in 2026 (see current lead times). Used and surplus units are the fastest path to energizing on schedule.

Choosing a 3000 kVA pad-mount transformer
Two 3000 kVA units can be very different transformers. Before you compare prices or availability, confirm these specs match your project:
- Primary voltage and taps. The utility or site distribution voltage (for example 12.47kV, 13.2kV, or 13.8kV). A multi-position primary tap changer lets one unit serve several system voltages.
- Secondary voltage. Usually 480Y/277V for commercial and industrial services at this size. The secondary is fixed by how the unit is built.
- Feed configuration. Radial feed (one primary source) or loop feed (the primary cable passes through to the next unit). This has to match the site design.
- Winding material. Copper or aluminum windings. Both are used in pad-mount transformers; your spec may call for one.
- Tank and cabinet. Mild steel or stainless steel construction, which matters most in corrosive or coastal environments.
- Insulating fluid. Mineral oil or a less-flammable fluid such as natural ester, which some sites and codes require.
- BIL rating. The basic impulse insulation level must meet the primary system’s requirement.
Full-load current at 3000 kVA
| Secondary voltage | Full-load current per phase |
|---|---|
| 480Y/277V | 3,608 A |
| 208Y/120V | 8,327 A |
Calculated as kVA × 1000 ÷ (1.732 × secondary voltage).
New vs. used: what it means for your schedule
New three-phase pad-mount units are commonly quoted at roughly 34–65 weeks from major manufacturers in 2026, and custom specs often take longer. A used or surplus unit is already built, so the wait is mostly about verification, testing, and freight. Before buying any used unit, review its nameplate, oil test results, and electrical test records. See current lead times and sources or read what to check before buying used.
3000 kVA pad-mount FAQ
What is the full-load current of a 3000 kVA transformer at 480V?
A 3000 kVA three-phase transformer with a 480Y/277V secondary has a full-load current of about 3,608 amps per phase (kVA × 1000 ÷ (1.732 × 480)). At 208Y/120V the same rating would be about 8,327 amps. Your electrical engineer sizes the service equipment and protection from these values.
Can a 3000 kVA pad-mount with a 480Y/277V secondary be used for 208V?
Not by itself. The tap changer on a pad-mount adjusts the primary (high-voltage) side, not the secondary. A 480Y/277V unit delivers 480Y/277V. If your building needs 208Y/120V, you need a unit built with that secondary, or step-down transformers downstream.
How long does a new 3000 kVA pad-mount transformer take to get?
New three-phase pad-mount units are commonly quoted at roughly 34–65 weeks from major manufacturers in 2026, with custom specs often longer. A used or surplus unit that's already built can be available much sooner. See our transformer lead times page for sources.
